Raising and caring for injured, unwanted, stray and domesticated birds - Alex's Story

Barbara & Alex
Alex is a Green Winged Macaw I adopted 5 years ago. When I first got Alex, he was feather picked from head to chest. Alex was a lucky bird because he had only one previous owner who had him for 24 years and took wonderful care of him. The family took Alex with them everywhere they went. One year, they could not take him and left him with a friend. Alex flew away and was missing for 3 weeks. Finally after many days of searching and money spent on ads & posters, Alex was found. He had been shot in the wings and chest, was very thin and the vet didn't think he would survive. With a lot of love and care, he made it but after the kids grew up and went on to college, there was no one around to take him outside, pet him, or love him. Alex grew nasty and screamed continually and bit everyone around him. Alex's owner bought him a pet cockatoo, thinking a friend would make him happier. Alex's friend did make him happy but lost his love of human contact (some birds get that way when exclusively around other birds for awhile). continued
